This gives you tremendous flexibility to create the kind of experience you want to offer your customers.

In short, there are no limits. 2012 is a great year to use Wi-Fi to connect with your customers and communicate your brand.

Here’s how to create new captive portals in SputnikNet.

Posted via email from Sputnik, Inc. And here’s what it does.

Content caching stores data from frequently visited web sites locally, on the router—or to be exact, on a USB flash drive attached to the router. That way, when the content is requested by a user’s browser it can be loaded locally, from the router, rather than over the Internet.

For example, lets say one of your users visits a popular site such as Facebook, Google News, Yahoo! News or YouTube. The first visitor fetches the web content from the Internet, and it is automatically stored by your Sputnik-powered router. The second visitor then only needs to fetch content that is unique to them—the rest is servved right from the router (at local network speed). As more content is added to the local cache, more and more becomes available to users on your local network.

It’s the same idea used by companies like Akamai to distribute content closer to the “edge” of the Internet, where users are. Only in this case, the “edge” is the Sputnik-powered router only a few feet from the user!

This can dramatically improve network performance and save bandwidth.

How much bandwidth? That depends upon your network. Customers are reporting savings of 10% or even more over time. (We’d love to hear from you if you’re running Sputnik-powered content caching to hear how much bandwidth you save.)

Content caching makes a big difference if the broadband network serving your hotspot is metered, or if you’re on a low bandwidth, high latency connection such as a sattelite.

Sputnik-powered content caching works with the routers we sell that include a USB port, for example the Cisco E200, Cisco E3000, Cisco E3200, Cisco E4200, Netgear WNR3500L and Asus RT-N16.* It requres a SputnikNet Pro subscription for that router.

OK – that sounds good, so how do you get started? It couldn’t be simpler.

Order a Sputnik flash drive from our online store. (We provision and test each USB flash drive to ensure it works well with SputnikNet.)

Put the flash drive into your Sputnik-powered router.

Enable USB support and turn on content caching.

Wait 15 minutes for your first bandwidth saving report.

That’s all there is to it. We hope that you enjoy saving bandwidth and providing a faster browsing experience to your customers!

* Supported router list is subject to change over time.

Posted via email from Sputnik, Inc. New innovations include:

Content Caching at the Edge

SputnikNet now enables customers to add a Sputnik-provisioned USB flash drive to popular devices, such as the Cisco E3200, Cisco E4200, and ASUS RT-N16 Wi-Fi routers, and enable content caching. This both improves network performance and saves bandwidth by storing frequently accessed web content locally, improving Wi-Fi user experience at the venue. In addition, new caching reports enable providers to view bandwidth savings and performance statistics.

Per-User Bandwidth Controls

Wi-Fi providers can set a maximum upload and download rate per subscriber, per session, and per Wi-Fi router. In addition, quality-of-service (QoS) throttling enables providers to limit popular peer-to-peer protocols such as BitTorrent.

SMS Authentication

SputnikNet offers a new SMS authentication system, enabling providers to text login codes to subscriber cell phones. Wi-Fi users simply enter their cell phone number into a captive portal and are texted the login code.

Sputnik has partnered with Essendex Limited for SMS messaging. As with all of Sputnik's payment-based authentication systems (for example PayPal, Credit Card, Prepaid), Sputnik does not charge any usage or revenue share fees.

Session Queueing

SputnikNet now enables providers to set the maximum number of Wi-Fi sessions on a router, after which users are given a place in line. (Similar to numbered tickets at a deli counter.) Wi-Fi users see a dynamically updated estimate of how long it will take for them to move to the front of the queue and get online.

Assets

SputnikNet now includes a new content management system for assets used in captive portals such as images, javascript, css, and html snippets. This feature enables providers to quickly upload graphics and other files into SputnikNet for reuse in portals. It also enables them, for example, to quickly change selected graphics across a range of portals.

Other Enhancements

SputnikNet contains many other improvements, including:

Enhanced user interface for faster, easier access to useful information and controls

Context-sensitive help, integrated documentation search and live support chat

Quick MAC lookup to survey Wi-Fi devices on networks

Radio scheduling to turn Wi-Fi off and on at defined intervals

Improved user session reports, enabling time and bandwidth summaries by router, subscriber, authentication system and captive portal

Captive portal preview in list view

Ability to harvest subscriber emails for building marketing lists

"Our engineers have been working hard to bring great new capabilities to SputnikNet," said David LaDuke, CEO Sputnik, Inc. "But we're not resting. Expect to see new innovations over the coming months as we maintain a laser focus on building the best, easiest-to-use application for cloud-managed, access controlled Wi-Fi in the world."

Pricing and availability

After a one-time $49.95 account setup fee, SputnikNet is $19.95/month, or $199.50/year, per managed router. Volume discounts kick in automatically as providers add managed Wi-Fi devices to their networks. Certain features require Sputnik Pro subscriptions at $49.95/month or $499.50/year, with volume discounts available. Providers can sign up for SputnikNet at http://store.sputnik.com.

Sputnik Agent firmware, which enables Wi-Fi routers from leading vendors such as ASUS, Cisco, EnGenius, NETGEAR and many others, is free. Sputnik firmware is available at http://www.sputnik.com/support/download.

Pre-formatted Sputnik USB cache drives are $49.95 and can be ordered at Sputnik's online store.

About Sputnik, Inc. "Maximum-performance" is how Cisco describes it, and we're inclined to agree. The device is rock solid, and can easily handle a large, heavily visited Wi-Fi hotspot without breaking a sweat.

The E4200 sports Cisco's new wedge-shaped design, and is surprisingly small for the power it packs. The E4200 enables simultaneous dual-band communications with 3x3 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology for a maximum throughput of 450 Mbps on the 5GHz band and 300 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band.

With six internal antennas, plus internal and external amplifiers, the E4200 offers great coverage, too. When you add Sputnik-powered DD-WRT firmware and an optional 12V Power over Ethernet (PoE) adapter you can boost the device's power to up to 400Mw to expand the dimensions of your Wi-Fi bubble.

The Cisco/Linksys E4200 includes 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports and a USB port (stay tuned for future developments on that front). But best of all, it can easily plug and play into centrally managed, access controlled Wi-Fi networks that you can control from anywhere using SputnikNet.

Pre-flashed and pre-provisioned to your SputnikNet account, the Cisco E4200 costs $199.95 in the Sputnik Online Store. Combined with a SputnikNet account and a pre-paid month of SputnikNet subscription it's $229.95; an annual version of the kit costs $309.95.

The Sputnik-Powered Cisco E4200 is a powerful, worry-free option for high-volume hotspots.

Posted via email from Sputnik, Inc. NOTE: this translates to an EIRP of 400 mW when taking into account antenna gain.*

To do this safely you'll need Sputnik-default DD-WRT firmware and a Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) Supply/Inserter with input 90-264VAC, Output 12V.

We sell such a PoE supply/inserter on our online store, here .

Here's how to make the 251 mW / 400 mW EIRP setting.

From SputnikNet choose "Config/Routers", select the router whose power you want to change, enter the value in the "Power" field and click "Save Settings".

<img src="http://content.wifi.sputnik.com/images/wireless-snet-251.png" alt="<# some text #>" />

From the local DD-WRT interface select "Wireless/Advanced Settings", enter the value in "TX Power", click "Save" and then "Apply Settings". (Note: you won't be allowed to make this setting unless you're running Sputnik-default DD-WRT firmware and your device is capable of running at that transmit power.)

<img src="http://content.wifi.sputnik.com/images/wireless-ddwrt-251.png" alt="<# some text #>" />

Important: use this setting with care. You can harm a device by running it at too high of a transmit power setting. If the device appears hot, you may want to throttle back. However, taking the proper precautions, 251 mW can work great with Sputnik-powered Linksys/Cisco E2000s and E3000s.

*251 mW is equivalent to 24 dBm. With 2 dBi gain antennas, that equates to 26 dBm. Converting 26 dBm back to mW (as the decibel scale is logarithmic) yields 398 mW.

Sputnik-Powered Cisco E3000 Wireless Router now available in our online store

The Sputnik-Powered Cisco E3000 router is now available, pre-flashed and pre-provisioned, in the Sputnik online store.
This powerhouse 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi access point router includes a 4-port 10/100/1000 MB wired LAN.

The Cisco E3000 offers simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi, which means you can use 5 MHz (802.11a) for long-range wireless backhaul and 2.4 MHz (802.11 b/g/n) for a hotspot.
The Cisco E3000 provides a large, busy hotspot with a solid platform for high-performance wireless networking. A hotspot in a school? Wireless broadband in a train station, regional airport or other transportation hub? Or any public gathering spot where you want the flexibility of being able to place your Wi-Fi access points indoors or outdoors?

Here's our solution: the Sputnik 320, a rugged, high-powered indoor/outdoor 802.11N Wi-Fi access point that is also a cloud-managed hotspot-in-a-box solution.

And here's how we make them. First, we take the 802.11 a/b/g/n router board from a Cisco e2000. This is a powerful, brilliantly engineered Wi-Fi router that includes a high-performance Broadcom BCM4717 processor running at 354 MHz.

We lovingly enclose the board in a rugged, weatherproof indoor/outdoor enclosure. Now the e2000 can go outside and play, even in the most demanding climates. Yes, even Canada.

We add a 7 dBi omnidirectional antenna with 5 degree downtilt and a Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) adapter. This gives you great coverage and the flexibility to place the device anywhere you want.

We flash the board with Sputnik-Powered DD=WRT firmware. This makes the Sputnik 320 ready to plug-and-play into a centrally managed hotspot network. It also gives you the ability to increase the device's power up to 251 mW, giving you a strong, clear signal that can penetrate walls, foliage and other obstacles.

We pre-provision the device to your SputnikNet account, so that when you receive it, all you need to do is supply power and broadband-- the device comes up automatically with all of its settings - power output, channel, SSID, captive portal, authentication systems, network policies and more. We also pre-test the device on your SputnikNet account before it ships.

With SputnikNet, the Sputnik 320 is a superb, easy-to-manage solution for free Wi-Fi, advertising-supported Wi-Fi, or paid Wi-Fi (you set your own rate plans and keep all the money - Sputnik doesn't take a cut). You can manage one or thousands of Sputnik 320s (and we would really like it if you'd do that) from a simple Web interface, from anywhere in the world.

All of this for $249.95 from our online store. You can also purchase the Sputnik 320 as a starter kit with a SputnikNet Account and pre-paid monthly or annual subscription at a discount .

The Sputnik 320 is already in service in hotels, convenience stores and other businesses, and is proving to be a dependable, powerful and affordable Wi-Fi hotspot controller.

Posted via email from Sputnik, Inc.
